Tips-Inclusivity_1200x630

Freddie Mac recently spoke with Tori Huntley, talent specialist, to learn more about how Freddie Mac is promoting and garnering inclusivity in the workplace.

What is inclusivity? What are some of the benefits of inclusion in the workplace?

It is easy to think that inclusivity simply means making people feel included. While this is true, inclusivity can be defined more broadly: Inclusivity is about  creating belonging so that people feel welcomed, respected, supported and valued. There are many benefits of an inclusive workplace, such as ensuring that  employees feel empowered to participate, collaborate, lead and share.

Why does Freddie Mac promote inclusion and belonging in the workplace?

Freddie Mac believes in maintaining a supportive culture that prioritizes inclusion and well-being and fostering a collaborative environment that welcomes creativity and problem solving. Put another way, we place a strong emphasis on inclusion as it is a key factor in the success of our organization. However, an organization cannot be successful solely based on its inclusion efforts. Diversity and inclusion must go hand in hand.

Diversity includes a combined mixture of both differences and similarities, this covers personal and organizational traits, values, beliefs, experiences, backgrounds, behaviors and perspectives. Inclusivity, on the other hand, lives within an organization when a culture of acknowledging the value, talents and viewpoints of everyone has been fostered.

What policies, programs, events or practices do we have in place to provide opportunities and resources for people who might otherwise be excluded?

We’ve established ten  Business Resource Groups (BRGs) to support individuals with similar and different interests and backgrounds, implemented policies surrounding  diversity, equity and inclusion, sourced wide pools of potential talent and facilitated various trainings — which includes our Mitigating Unconscious Bias in Hiring training, which ensures people leaders interview and hire without bias. These groups in turn support our company by developing leaders, increasing our skills and building community.

Diversity and inclusion go beyond business resource groups, training and hiring —  it’s part of who we are and why we’re so successful.

Outside of participating in Freddie Mac-created programming, how can I promote inclusivity in my day-to-day work? How can I help others do the same?

In our day-to-day work, we can always strive to be more inclusive by being patient, listening to others, and welcoming new and different perspectives. We can participate in events, ask questions and learn about our colleagues' interests. And we can also speak up about inclusion,  be an ally, make connections, and foster a sense of belonging for our coworkers.

To  help others do the same, we can educate and connect with others, celebrate our differences and encourage open communication. At Freddie Mac, we can proudly say we are Home to Inclusion.
