There are many  benefits to a diverse team and embracing diversity as a leader.  Here are four tips to prioritize diversity to be a better leader.

1.    Learn About Unconscious Biases

We aren’t always aware of our own internal biases and prejudices. It’s only through identifying the biases we hold and educating ourselves about them that we can bring about true change.

Research institutes have created resources, such as  Project Implicit, to help you determine which unconscious biases you may hold.

2.    Be an Active Listener

More listening and less talking brings about transformation. Some of the best leaders learn from those who work with them. One of the best things a leader can do is to listen to the people who want to add to the culture and diversity of the organization.

For example, Freddie Mac’s  10 business resource groups provide an opportunity to access diverse groups of employees looking to foster an inclusive workforce.

3.    Communicate with Clarity

Make sure to communicate clearly when establishing goals, policies and team ethos. Try to prevent and address misunderstandings that can lead to unequal work dispersions or negative attitudes, while setting expectations about how you want people to be treated.

4.    Leading by Example

Leading by example can be done in many ways, including participating in diversity and inclusion events, asking hard questions, and being willing to acknowledge what it is that you still need to learn.

Freddie Mac’s Rising Leaders Business Resource Group, a group that promotes professional growth through developing leadership skills, offers a variety of opportunities and programming that showcases and embraces the diversity that is Freddie Mac.

“We believe that strength can be found in our differences — in how we see the world, how we process information, what we do and where we are from,” said Phyllicia Okoba, co-chair of Rising Leaders. “Our business resource group enjoys bringing together people from diverse backgrounds for our members to learn from.”
