In recent years, Freddie Mac has taken an action-oriented stance to increase the number of women in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers. Women in technology play an important role in helping Freddie Mac succeed, and there are many opportunities within the organization to start and build a career in technology.

On a national scale,   women still only make up 28% of the STEM workforce. And the women who do have careers in tech often don’t stay in the field: research shows that   50% of women abandon careers in tech by the age of 35 and leave the field at a 45% higher rate than men. Freddie Mac is trying to change this trajectory. From launching the first-ever servicing application programming interface (API) to building key tools for the Reimagine Servicing initiative, women have led and made their mark on many projects at Freddie Mac.

“Freddie Mac believes in the people who they know can get the job done,” said Cecelia Raine, VP of servicing strategy and integration. “And they just happen to be women.”

Freddie Mac Relies on Women in Tech to Keep Pace

Freddie Mac may operate in the finance and housing industry, but we rely on our employees to keep up with the constantly changing and evolving technology sector to remain a leader in the servicing industry. It’s important that our team grows and evolves in pace with the ever-changing technology space.

“Learning something new is always encouraged,” said Courtney Liebowitz, director of information security, who manages two teams, one comprised entirely of seven diverse women. “Whenever I have wanted to try something new or get new information, I have been supported. My ideas are always heard.”

For women looking to get into the technology space, the opportunities for exploration within the field are vast. “Freddie Mac is a great place to start because there's so much to do in information technology,” said Elvira-Maria Rodriguez, director of information security. “You aren't just going to work in operations. You can also deal with finance supporting those operations or ensuring our regulatory commitments are being done or running IT risk reduction.”

The Importance of Gender Diversity at Freddie Mac

Diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) is a pillar of Freddie Mac, and our longstanding commitment to it is embedded throughout our culture and how we do business. It’s not just a slogan. We believe that hiring a diverse workforce creates a stronger Freddie Mac and is an essential practice in the workplace.

“I’m happy that Freddie Mac is focused on inclusion and making sure we’re bringing in talent from diverse groups of people, women, colors and cultures,” said Marjorie Boursiquot, senior director of business transformation. “The diversity of thought that brings is really important when we are trying to do things in an innovative, creative and modern way.”

The women who lead teams demonstrate the importance of gender diversity in technology through their incredible successes and breakthroughs in the field.

“At Freddie Mac, we’ve proven that we can do it,” Raine said about promoting women in the technology field. “We’re setting the tone. Women bring the skills and talents of building technology to the table just as much as men do. We’ve set the example already, and we will continue to do that.”
